Who We Are

Ashgate Croft School is a designated Area Special School within the Derbyshire Local Authority. While our allocated capacity is 148 places, we are currently oversubscribed, with 161 pupils enrolled from Year R to Year 14.

Our pupils have a wide range of cognitive and physical abilities, requiring specialist support to meet their individual needs.
We cater to children and young people with severe learning difficulties who would find it challenging to thrive in a mainstream school setting.

Our pupils function significantly below age-related expectations, with some having profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) and a large number being autistic.

Our class sizes typically range from 7 to 12 pupils, ensuring a supportive and tailored learning environment. Smaller class sizes are essential for those with complex needs, allowing us to provide individualised education and care..

To enhance our curriculum and support our pupils’ learning, we offer a variety of enriching experiences, including:

  • Forest School, providing hands-on outdoor learning opportunities
  • A Food Technology Room, where pupils develop essential cooking skills
  • The Croft, an independent living skills area designed to promote self-sufficiency
  • Soft Play Room, encouraging safe and engaging play
  • The Lodge, an on-site work experience area to help prepare pupils for adulthood
  • Hydrotherapy Pool, supporting physical development and well-being
  • Sensory Room, offering a calming environment to help pupils regulate their emotions
