Somercotes Infants School – Newsletter
Dear Somercotes families,
The academic year seems to be moving quickly now as we move into the Summer terms! As we return from Easter and the weather begins to warm up, there is always a lovely buzz around school in anticipation of all of the excitement that the Summer term brings. We have Sports Day, Ozzy Obstacle, the school trip, several parent coffee mornings and other parental events planned in the calendar too.
School Trip
We are fast approaching the required deadline for school trip payments and consent forms for this trip to be able to go ahead. At present, there are a high percentage of outstanding payments and permission forms. Unfortunately, if these aren’t received we will be unable to proceed with the school trip.
Thanks to the continued support of our school families, Mr Lillie’s previous fundraising, contributions from local businesses and the tireless work of our staff team, we are delighted to announce that this year’s whole school trip has been heavily subsidised and is available for all families at the discounted cost of £3.50 per child!
This year we have booked to take the children to Chatsworth House on Friday 10th July to explore the farmyard and adventure playground. Each class will also benefit from a specific workshop / experience. This visit should be costing £17.00 per child, so again our thanks go out to all who have contributed.
The school team are working on the planning and risk assessments process and will be in touch in the near future with further information.
More Exciting Events – 1st May
This Friday we have our next Reception Stay and Play opportunity where parents will be invited into school to enjoy spending time with their children. If you would like to attend, simply come to the office at 2:00 – 3:00.
This event will be followed by the KS1 open evening, where parents will be invited to pop into their child’s classroom on collection to see a book or piece of work that their child is proud of. This will be from 3:00 – 3:15.
More Exciting Events – 15th May
Another addition to your calendar! This term the school council have again been discussing ideas for further exciting events with all the children in school, with a dress up day being chosen as the winner.
As such, on Friday 15th May the children will be invited to attend school dressed in bright colours. There is no charge for this event, it is simply a celebration of the bright, brilliant people who make up our wonderful school. As always, please ensure that all children are dressed appropriately for a day at school (including break and lunch time). Furthermore, a reminder that children are also welcome to attend in their school uniform if they prefer.
Active Lives Survey
Somercotes Infants School has been selected by Sport England to complete the Active Lives Survey: Children and Young People. This survey has been developed in conjunction with the Department for Education, the Department of Health and Social Care, and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
Schools are chosen at random each term to complete the survey to help us gain a better understanding of young people’s attitudes and behaviours towards physical activity.
As a thank you for completing the survey, school will receive a Healthy Schools accreditation, as well as a detailed individual report and some free sports equipment!
You will also be contributing to the local and national picture of children’s physical health and wellbeing, particularly how much sport and physical activity they do, and their thoughts and feelings towards it.
The deadline for the summer term completion is Friday 24th July. Click Here
Continued Support
As part of the above-mentioned planned events, School are planning to host a parent workshop to support families in continuing their child’s learning beyond the classroom. This will be a short, informal session led by Mr Rowland, where parents can gain a better understanding of the expectations of the national curriculum for their child, the levels that the children are assessed against, and take away easy ideas and games to enable the children to continue their learning beyond the classroom.
Welcome to our new Reception children
Finally, a warm welcome to all our new reception families. We are proud that you have chosen our school to begin your child’s learning journey and look forward to a successful time together.
Reception new starter events
We currently have two new starter events booked in for our new Reception cohort! The first of these will be Tuesday 2nd June, where parents are invited to attend school with their child between 10:00 and 11:15.
The second of these will be the whole school transition day, which is scheduled to be Thursday 9th July, where the children will be invited to attend school with their adult from 9:30 – 11:30.
Once again, thank you for your continued support. We now look forward to the amazing time that we have ahead of us this academic year, full of learning and lots of fun! As always, should you have any questions or wish to discuss anything further please do not hesitate to ask.
Warm regards,
Mr Rowland
