Spring term 2026 – Newsletter 13

Somercotes Infants School – Newsletter

Dear Somercotes families,

The academic year seems to be moving on quickly now as we move into the Summer terms! As we return from Easter and the weather begins to warm up, there is always a lovely buzz of anticipation around school for all of the excitement that the Summer term brings. We have Sports Day, Ozzy Obstacle, the school trip, several parent coffee mornings and other parental events planned or in the calendar too.

Working Hard

We begin our newsletter with a huge well done for all across our school. The progress and learning in every classroom has been fantastic this year. The children are speaking proudly about their learning and enjoy flicking back through their books to see how their work has changed over time. This all comes down to hard work. The hard work of the children (including attendance). The hard work of the adults in school. And the hard work from parents continuing your child’s learning beyond the classroom by reading regularly, asking questions about their day, sharing seesaw pictures together and continued practise at home too. The efforts and learning now, even at this young age, are statistically proven to have a lasting impact on your child’s later life experiences.

Continued Support

As part of the above mentioned parental events planned, School are planning to host a parent workshop to support families in continuing their child’s learning beyond the classroom. This will be a short, informal session led by Mr Rowland, where parents can gain a better understanding of the expectations of the national curriculum for their child, the levels that the children are assessed against, and take away easy ideas and games to enable the children to continue their learning beyond the classroom.

Safe Parking

Last week school received a communication from one of our neighbours detailing concerns around parking during school pick up and drop off times. Please ensure that you park considerately, and that your parking does not impact local residents or other road users however short your stay might be.

School Trip

Next, a reminder that thanks to the continued support of our school families, Mr Lillie’s previous fundraising, contributions from local business’ and the tireless work of our staff team, we are delighted to announce that this year’s whole school trip will be heavily subsidised and will be available for all families at the discounted cost of £3.50 per child!

At present, there are a high percentage of outstanding payments required for this school trip to go ahead, including several permission forms.

This year we have booked to take the children to Chatsworth House on Friday 26th June to explore the farmyard and adventure playground. Each class will also benefit from a specific workshop / experience. This visit should be costing £17.00 per child, so again our thanks go out to all who have contributed.

The school team are working on the planning and risk assessments process, and will be in touch in the near future with further information.

Welcome to our new Reception children

Finally, a warm welcome to all of our new reception families. We are proud that you have chosen our school to begin your child’s learning journey and look forward to a successful time together.

Once again, thank you for your continued support. We now look forward to the amazing time that we have ahead of us this academic year, full of learning and lots of fun! As always, should you have any questions or wish to discuss anything further please do not hesitate to ask.

“Working together to enable our children and families to achieve their full potential and be successful in our diverse world”
