Dear Somercotes families,

World Book Day – Today

This year, we again focussed our day on the importance of Bedtime Stories in building a love of reading for all children and adults too, with the children looking very comfortable in their pyjamas or looking proud dressed as book characters! It was lovely to see the children engaged in listening to a range of different stories, read by different adults, while enjoying their milk and biscuits. We hope they come home ready to share with you some of the stories they have listened to today.

School Council

Last week our school council met to discuss their suggestions for some upcoming events and to share their ideas for school improvements. Their suggestions were fantastically mature, with nobody asking for a swimming pool in school or even a pet elephant for their classes!

The children have suggested an Easter colouring competition, as well as the usual Easter egg hunts on the playground in the final week of the term.

The children have also suggested some interesting ideas for an outdoor theatre and a school talent show!

The school improvement ideas shared by the school council again made us feel proud of the confident learners that we are developing. The children asked for the dinner hall to be a little quieter as they are aware that these noisy areas can hurt their friends ears. The children also asked for opportunities to read with their adults from home in school, showcasing their progress.

Eco Warriors

This term our Eco Warriors will also be planning a toy and clothing donation where the children will seek to distribute all donations to those in need (both in school and externally).

Clean Air Zones

The government are seeking to extend the ‘smoke free zones’ around schools to include vaping and all other forms of second hand smoke Click here. We already ask for our lane and surrounding areas to be ‘smoke free’ for our children, but ask for your continued support in making all of our gates ‘smoke free’ on school drop off and collection.

Absence reporting

Finally, a reminder that all absences from school must be reported via the school office or via parentmail. Whilst Seesaw is a fantastic tool for parent-staff communications, it cannot be used for absence reporting.
